Visible in GPT, missing in Gemini or AIO — diagnosing engine gaps
Short answer: If a brand shows up in ChatGPT but disappears in Gemini or AI Overview, that is usually an extraction/corroboration gap by surface — not “one bad AI score.” Fix pages that can be retrieved (table, FAQ, pinned facts), check which sources each engine cites, then re-measure per-engine columns. Do not average into one number and “fix AI.”
Quick facts
- Three typical gap patterns: (1) GPT present / Gemini–AIO empty, (2) named without owned URL, (3) AIO summarizes but cites other domains.
- AI Mode ≠ AI Overview. Label them separately in reports; merging them blurs diagnosis.
- Page fixes first, Prompt tips later. Extractable structure beats “how to ask ChatGPT.”
- Sources cited in GPT are clues, not proof every engine already agrees.
- Harvest volume can thin — a “new” gap is sometimes a denominator artifact, not your content rotting overnight.
- No promise to “fix Gemini next week.” What you can promise: column audit + URL fixes + re-measure in +7–14 days.
Three gap patterns (read before panicking)
- Strong in GPT, empty in Gemini or AIO — the chat surface already found a trail; the Search/AI Overview layer has not extracted it or chose a different consensus.
- Brand name present, owned URL absent — you are named via other sources. Your page is not yet the retrieved proof.
- AIO/AI Mode shows a summary without you — competitors or third-party lists fill the slot; the owned page is not retrievable or not corroborated.
All three need page work and/or corroboration — not a new blended score.
Diagnosis steps (no Prompt tips)
1. Freeze the same prompts
Use a versioned question set. Do not compare a loose GPT prompt to a different question in Gemini.
2. Log sources per engine
| Engine | Brand present? | Cited source / domain | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| GPT | Yes / no | … | … |
| Gemini | Yes / no | … | … |
| AIO | Yes / no | … | … |
| AI Mode (if measured) | Yes / no | … | … |
3. Match against your pages
Does the claim GPT cites already live on an owned page with answer-first, pinned facts, table, FAQ? If not, Gemini/AIO are often pickier about clear structure.
4. Fix 1–3 URLs, not 30 mill articles
Prioritize answer pages for the highest-value business prompts. Crawlable text beats PDF-only or video-only.
5. Re-measure the same columns
+7–14 days after live/crawlable. Compare engine to engine. Log total citation volume in the monitor — if the denominator shrinks, footnote the slide.
Table: pattern × likely cause × page fix
| Pattern | Likely cause | Page fix (not Prompt tips) |
|---|---|---|
| GPT present, Gemini empty | Claim lives in chat-friendly sources; owned page weak structure / weak external corroboration | Pin facts up top, add table+FAQ, keep stable HTML text |
| GPT present, AIO empty | AIO leans on Search traces / a different consensus | Align owned claims with relevant third-party sources; clarify entity & category |
| Named without owned URL | Name is circulating; page not extractable | Build/tighten a citable answer page; keep name & claims consistent |
| AI Mode ≠ AIO in the report | Two surfaces merged without labels | Split columns; do not “fix Search AI” as one bucket |
| All engines empty after a chart “rise” | Volume/denominator thinned or prompt set drifted | Check harvest source totals + prompt version before blaming content |
| Video/podcast only, no text | Machines need a retrievable text page | Add companion HTML/RH article with FAQ — example frame: https://proxemicspodcast.com/article-podcast-komunikasi.html |
What this is not
- Swapping dashboards so the average looks higher.
- Promising “Gemini green next week.”
- Filling the backlog with Prompt tips / ChatGPT meta.
- Treating
llms.txtas the sole fix. - Equating an engine gap with a failed GEO procurement pitch.
FAQ
Do we need different content per engine?
Not as separate mills. One clear answer page usually serves many surfaces. What differs is how engines extract — so fix structure and corroboration, not five slogan variants.
Is AI Mode the same as AI Overview?
No. Both can appear in the Search ecosystem, but behavior and citations can differ. Report them as separate columns. Merging them makes the gap look like “one AI problem.”
When is the gap data thinning, not content?
If total source/citation rows in the monitor drop sharply while your content has not changed, per-engine SoV can shift because of the denominator. Flag a volume caveat before dramatically changing page strategy.
Can we promise to “fix Gemini next week”?
No. The ethical commit: a list of URLs to fix, columns to re-measure, and a +7–14 day window. Citations are not guaranteed.
Do we need new tools for this diagnosis?
Optional. What is mandatory: frozen prompts, a per-engine table, and page decisions. Tools without decisions = another cosmetic score.
